Elevator Repair Service Presents No Great Society

The Elevator Repair Service’s inspired take on the Beat writers is a delight for theatregoers who feed on whimsical experimental works. While the group’s latest No Great Society may raise some mainstream audience eyebrows, it’s eminently entertaining. The performance pieces together interview bits and movie script fragments showcasing Jack Kerouac’s deliciously delirious mind, initially through a deadpan William F. Buckley Jr.-type talk-show format, before shifting to a frenetic interpretation of the obscure Beat film Pull My Daisy (1959), vividly executed by Susie Sokol as Jack. Suspending disbelief is strongly advised, if only to get lost in the group’s gently constructed universe.
